Every fisherman has heard of that one place in their area that is rumored to hold monster bass. The only problem is that place is usually also rumored to be “private”. It’s common knowledge that the harder it is to fish a spot, the bigger/more aggressive the bass probably are. Let me first say that I am in no way condoning trespassing. If you know that a pond or other body of water is definitely private and they don’t allow fishing, then stay off it. Like all rules though, there are loopholes and things you can do to make it a little bit easier on yourself while fishing.
1. Don’t be an Idiot- This one should be obvious. I’ve found that the reason fishing isn’t allowed at 99% of private ponds is because people are plain disrespectful. Leaving trash everywhere, yelling/swearing, and just being rude. Most of the time if people see that you are just there to fish and aren’t making a mess or noise then they are fine with you being there. As long as you pick up after yourself and respect the property there usually isn’t an issue.
2. Be Polite/Calm- The absolute worst thing to do when an angry owner/homeowner approaches you is to be aggressive back towards them. That will get you nowhere. Just calmly and politely explain to them that you are only there to fish and will leave if they don’t want you there. The worst possible thing to do is get into an altercation with someone and get the police involved.
3. Ask Permission- This is the best way to avoid #2. This step involves doing a little homework but is well worth it. Find out who owns the land and simply ask them if you can fish there. It’s also best to find out if you have any connection to that person to use as your in. They may be an acquaintance of someone you know and will make it much likelier that they say yes.
4. More Research- Knowledge is key. Just because there’s a no trespassing sign up doesn’t always mean that someone actually owns that property. Sometimes people living in the surrounding houses will actually put up no trespassing to cut down on traffic/noise/loitering. Call your local police station to find out if anyone actually owns the land. They may direct you to someone else who can tell you what you need to know. That way if the police are called by neighbors you’ll be covered.
5. Paperwork- In the event that the police/EP are called, having all your licenses and paperwork in order is key. This will make it much easier on you and them. This should go without saying but being polite/calm will go a long way in this situation also.
6. Ignorance/Apologize- Once again I am in no way condoning trespassing but if all else fails plead ignorance and apologize profusely.
